Michigan ASCD Members can earn SB-CEUs for attending Michigan ASCD Board Meetings and Professional Development events.
In order to be eligible, each board member must attend at least 3/4 of the total number of meetings, at a minimum of 6 meetings per academic year. Therefore, any Michigan ASCD board member present at every Board Meeting, and having signed in and out on the official Michigan ASCD Board Meeting SB-CEU sheet, will be eligible for 3.0 SB-CEUs.
Some Facts about State Board Certified Education Units
SB-CEUs are State Board approved conferences, in-services, or training workshops used for the renewal of selected certificates issued by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
For renewal, an individual must complete 6 semester hours or 18 SB-CEUs or a combination of both every 5 years. SB-CEUs are calculated by dividing the total number of contact or instructional hours by the number 10. Thus, a 5-hour session equals .5 SB-CEUs.
Generic CEUs cannot be used toward renewal of Michigan Teacher Certificate. Only State approved SB-CEU training counts toward certificate renewal. Training programs and/or conference sponsored by an authorized provider of the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) may be eligible for SB-CEUs via a collaborative agreement between MDE and IACET
Approved Sponsors
Only Approved sponsors may apply directly to the MDE for approval to offer training and/or conferences for SB-CEUs. An approved sponsor may be in any one of the following six categories:
1. Michigan accredited colleges and universities
2. Michigan institution approved by the State Board of Education to prepare Michigan teachers
3. Michigan accredited community colleges
4. The Michigan Department of Education
5. Michigan School districts (both local and intermediate) private schools, and public school academies
6. Local, State, and national (with state or local chapter) professional education organizations
Individuals and SB-CEU approved sponsors are required to collect and maintain records of all eligible participants who request SB-CEUs.
A workshop cannot be approved with less than 5 contact hours.
College and University classes must be relevant to certification area and/or education to be approved.
SB-CEU transcripts are available to Michigan ASCD members for Michigan ASCD sponsored conferences/workshops. For information, please contact:
