Certificate in Educational Assessment For Practitioners

A unique opportunity for educators who want to learn more about student assessment has been created by Michigan State University. The College of Education will begin a three-course sequence (nine semester hours) for practitioners that will lead to a Certificate in Educational Assessment. These courses will help educators better understand the educational assessments they administer and use. The courses are designed for educators with a minimum of statistical or technical background, and will stress the understanding of key measurement concepts situated in practical settings.

The three courses included in the Certificate are as follows:

CEP 823     Balanced Assessment Systems
This course provides an overview of summative assessments (at the national, state, and local levels), interim benchmark assessments, and classroom-based assessments.
(Offered Fall 08, Mondays 4-7 pm)

CEP 825     Educational Assessments and Testing Programs
This course provides a more intense coverage of large-scale assessment programs at the national and state levels. It will also present information about interim benchmark assessments that may be used at the district and school levels. (Offered Spring 09)

CEP 837     Analyzing, Using, and Reporting Assessment Results
This course gives hands-on experience in analyzing the results from national, state and commercial tests to determine trends in student learning and to determine weaknesses shown by the exams. Software designed to facilitate the analysis and use of assessment results will be reviewed. Using these analyses and the data to determine how schools can improve student learning, and report results to a variety of audiences, will also be presented.
(Offered Fall 09)

Other courses that may interest you include:

CEP 822     Approaches to Educational Research (Currently offered)

WriteStepsWriteSteps

WriteSteps was created to assist the teacher in using the most current techniques and strategies to meet the writing Grade Level Content Expectations. WriteSteps provides classroom demonstration lessons on DVDs that allow teachers to quickly apply techniques and strategies to help students meet and exceed standards on the ELA MEAP test.  WriteSteps lessons are balanced writing lessons that use guided and independent writing within a writing workshop framework.

Teachers can read books or attend workshops about how to teach writing and slowly develop and refine their individual writing lesson plans and techniques.  However, for efficient implementation of proven techniques and strategies, there are no substitutes for seeing master teachers model lessons with real kids in real classrooms.  Although WriteSteps lessons are very complete, they also provide plenty of flexibility for teachers to add their own special touches to tailor the material to their students and their teaching style to enrich the learning experience.

Each teacher’s kit includes a year’s worth of demonstration lessons on DVDs.  The DVDs include Professional Development suggestions and instructions embedded as text through out the modeled lessons. The lessons are research-based and specifically designed to meet the Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations. Also included are all the reproducibles needed to replicate the GLCE lessons in the classroom. The Kits are very teacher friendly and even include the overheads and posters to teach the lessons!  The lesson materials, reproducibles, overheads and DVDs are in a three ring binder organized by lesson for the busy teacher.

The WriteSteps lessons have been developed and refined based on a Writing Consultant’s experience as a writing coach in more than 300 Michigan classrooms. Therefore, WriteSteps lessons have been tested, refined and proven in Michigan classrooms with different teaching styles, various class sizes and social economic levels.
